TIP: You are your own brand and you need to market yourself with that in mind.  Identify who you are and what your company stands for before hitting the road with the latest PR gimmick. What good is it if the world sees or hears you and thinks of fuzzy kittens on your YouTube video, but you’re selling hardware? You need to develop a strategy for your self-promotion that just doesn’t get you out there, but instead gets you out there with meaning, with creativity, and that’s consistent with your business mission. You need to be able to stand out in a crowd.

I’m often amazed at business owners who are too busy to spend one on one quality time with their clients. They’re running all over the place, getting things done, and checking items off their list, but often are forgetting one thing – that a company or client hires us, and they keep us in business. Without clients, we have no business.

Every relationship needs some face time and TLC. And, it doesn’t matter if it’s your sweetheart or your biggest client who helps pay your mortgage.

My short Make Money Money thought today is this:

  • Make it a priority to spend time with your client.
  • Ask what they need.
  • Listen with both ears.
  • Assess their request and promise to respond on it, in a timely fashion.
  • Do what you can to act on it – if it works. For you, for the relationship, or for growth opportunities.
  • I like dinner because it’s a time to unwind, and forces me to leave the office, to get out from behind the computer and see the world. And, what a lovely world it is.

Don’t forget as well to look for other deals online, or to use Groupon, Living Social, and your city’s local coupon opportunities; they’re everywhere. They sit in a folder on my computer so I won’t be tempted by every bargain that passes my eye.

Enjoy dinner. Enjoy your client. And remember, you are your business, so make it who you truly are.

The night before my MMM Tour, I came down with a vicious stomach flu. Feeling better in the morning, I ventured out, not wanting to cancel my Back Bay coffee stop, and eager to talk with entrepreneurs who might want to toss around a few business ideas.

What I didn’t realize was that it was my stomach that was tossing around.  So, I made an executive decision to call it quits – moments after I found a parking spot on Newbury Street, which is no easy feat!

Needless to say, I couldn’t get home quickly enough, and took it easy for the rest of the day.  Several hours, several naps, and several cups of green tea later, I was feeling better. But, I was home, not at my Make Money Monday Tour, helping small business owners.

So I’m writing with the hopes that anyone who may be tossing and turning with a great idea, and who missed me at my MMM stop in Back Bay,  give me a call for some one-on-one time.

Life happens and we make good.

I’d like to take it one step further.

I’d like to make great — wherever I go, and whatever I do.

I’​m finding that with the current economic marketplace, I advise small business owners to give lots of added value.

Instead of discounting programs, I suggest that they add to an established program. That often makes a difference;​ i.e., a half day session included with a six month program, for business coaching for example.

There are many vendors that may offer your service, but you have to personalize your products to their needs (not yours) without giving up integrity, or doing it for free.

By adding a little extra, of their perceived value, you’​ll turn a prospect into a customer.

I’ve come to the conclusion that if you want something, you’ve got to ask. Want to close a client? Ask for the order.

Have a special request at your favorite bistro?

You’ve got to ask.

Love a dress at in the window at Nordstrom’s and want to see it? You’ll never know how it looks unless you ask!

MILTON —Strategist Robin Samora helps professionals, entrepreneurs and small businesses with the launch of her new personal coaching business Let’s Make You Shine. The Milton resident started the business coaching service last June, as part of her event planning and marketing firm Partner Promotions Inc.

During her 20-year career as a business strategist, Samora worked with many large corporations. But she said she started Let’s Make You Shine as a way to give back to aspiring entrepreneurs who need solid business advice.

Samora reviews different aspects of a client’s business, including what is being done in the marketplace and how her clients are presenting themselves. Samora goes a step further to develop a rapport with her clients to help manage their day-to-day struggles as well as their long-term goals.

“I help people that are ready to make a difference and do something big with their life,” Samora said. “That’s the kind of person that I like to work with. I’ve worked a lot with my own coaches … and I think that’s what really opened my eyes, is learning about really what’s serving you in your life and what’s not.”

Samora meets with her clients for a couple of two-hour sessions each month, and tries to hold her clients accountable for sticking with the strategic plans they develop.

Samora has been taking her business savvy on the road by hosting a business strategy tour, a series of informal talks at coffee houses throughout the Boston area.

The events are coined “Make Money Mondays” and are part of her push to spread the word about her new business. Samora’s tours finish at the end of June but will resume in September.

“I’ve worked with all different kinds of people to help motivate them, to get them where they need to go,” Samora said. “When they finish with me, my goal is for them to see themselves in such a different light and they are just beside themselves, so happy.”

Today’s Million Dollar Tip, is something you may or may not be doing. But, it’s important enough to be a reminder. Stay current with what’s going on in your industry. Take and make the time to learn, and see what others are doing, and how they’re doing it.

Some professionals have to do it to keep their jobs or license.
Entrepreneurs, and small business owners are sometimes so busy “getting” and “doing” all the work, that they put learning and continuing education on the back burner.

I’ve come to learn that connecting with experts, and those who may know more than you in a certain subject, is an important part of growth and expansion. It may be costly, but doesn’t it cost you every time you lose a job, customer or quote?

If our role as a business owner is to help clients solve problems, my thought is to have all the tools (or as many as possible) in your tool belt to help get the job done, and done well. You may not have all the tools at hand — all the time. Some you may have to borrow (a colleague’s advice). Some you may have to rent (hiring an expert ). Some you may send away for (CD’s, books, programs). And frankly, some you may have to dust off and re-sharpen (proposals or ideas that were brilliant that you may have forgotten)!

For me, it’s spot coaching on areas I’d like to learn more about. I’m reading, listening, and working with experts to grow my solid knowledge base to new levels.

For some learning is an excuse to not do the work. For me, it’s inspiration to be able to help more.

Robin Samora, Business & Life Strategist, discussed ways to use your brilliance to boost your bottom line at a gathering for small business owners and entrepreneurs at the Citizen’s Bank in East Milton on February 15.

The group was eager to learn from Samora, a successful entrepreneur who has launched two companies and makes it her mission to help small business owners make more profits, get more attention, and stand out in a crowded marketplace.

Robin, who has worked with major Fortune 500 companies promoting products and services, wanted to utilize her talents and years of business experience, realizing that she loved working one on one with clients and small businesses.

It’s my first Make Money Monday, and I’m in coffee shop not in my local area. How cool. Perfect opportunity to say hi, to business folks, entrepreneurs, and soloists working at perhaps “their” favorite coffee shop. Everyone has one, right?

So my million dollar tip, besides a million dollar smile, is to just get out there and take a risk. I’m working it, and feeling good about my life and my business.

“Nothing ventured nothing gained”, my entrepreneurial Dad would tell me. I’m showing up, fully present, reading the Money & Investing section of the Wall Street Journal for free, and agreeing with the trend of bankers to look at the person, their character, and centers of influence when they are making judgment about a loan. Going back to the “past”…in some instances.

I find it a good sign that banks are realizing that it’s people behind businesses, and that good people with character will work through their problems, with good intention. It’s small business owners all over the world, that help the economy get better, that give people a chance, and owners that take chances themselves – even when they may be feeling a little afraid.

Calculated risks , knowledge, visions of a better life for their families, and a good dose in faith that what they’re doing is right, for right now – cause that’s all we have. If we’re talking about investing — It’s not just about the Mega-Machine. I’m putting my dollars in Mega-Me. I know her pretty well.

If you weren’t on the call with me this week, I had the pleasure of interviewing my dear friend and colleague, Nikki Incandela, a celebrity photographer from La Jolla, California. She spoke about the importance of putting pizazz in your picture, and what your image says about you in branding.

Nikki and I have been working together informally for a couple of years, but recently – she has started to POP! BANG! And bring on the FIREWORKS!

For quite some time, she had an idea for a luxury T-shirt line, Your F’exy — and I was lucky enough to witness the birth of this new fashion division. From concept to logo, from sketches to production — in just three short weeks. And where did she debut? At the Sundance Film Festival, of course.

Nikki got a website up in just two weeks (with the right team behind her). She had celebrity photographs posted on Facebook, and on her blog. And now, she’s in business, taking orders for her Your F’exy line. Mind you, this was all while she creating amazing photography for entrepreneurs, small business owners –and clients from the red carpet to royalty.

Nikki added another profit center to her already successful business. She took a risk for a potential reward – which aligned with her fashion sense, and her core beliefs. She knew before she started that she could do it.

What’s particularly exciting for me, is that right after our call on Tuesday, Nikki let me know she was asked to go to LA this weekend, to not only shoot at the Oscars, but also to get fitted for a couture dress to wear on the runway.

The Lesson I’m offering? No risk, No reward. Go for it. Don’t wait for someone to discover you. Put yourself out there and celebrate your BRAND.

For now, pretend it’s bigger than it is. If you do what it takes, you’ll grow into your new shoes.

Nikki works at her public image using networking, social media, and she is a fabulous photographer. She also aligns herself with who she is, and where she wants to go!

Friends, where do you want to go? What courage do you need to get off the bench? What guidance will help you with your idea?

You don’t have to be a celebrity photographer. You can be a budding author, a publicist, a realtor who has it all together, but holds back.

In prior years, I held back. But why? Probably the same reason as you.

Now, what the heck. I’m going for it – and, in a big way.
