February is Black History Month and as a small business marketing consultant – and someone who loves grants – I’d like to highlight grant opportunities for minorities – as well as the pioneering spirit of black business owners throughout history. From Madam C.J. Walker, the first female self-made millionaire in America, to the innovative minds behind Greenwood (the “Black Wall Street”), these entrepreneurs opened doors that never existed and set examples that inspired millions.
Let’s be clear. Every entrepreneur needs resilience, creativity, and determination – but minorities in the past and today have faced adversity in ways we might not have personally experienced. So, for every small business owner of every color, in every region of the world, I have three words.
Yes You Can.
When you can’t find a way. Find a work around. If the timing isn’t right, there will be the right time. And as I always tell my clients, look ahead. Opportunities show up all the time when you’re open to them = like the small business grants and resources I’ve listed below.
If you’re reading this and aren’t a minority business owner, or woman of color, support your sister and brother organizations. Offer to help, listen, and give advice when asked. Remember where you started (many of us, with nothing). And remember the times in your life when you were ready to give up. Every one of us has a story to share.
Write your own chapter about your inspiring story. Explore how social and digital strategies — along with grant opportunities, can transform your business. Catch the wind in your sails (sales) and build momentum. Explore what’s out there. Inspired action does it every time.

Heads up to all small business owners out there. Grants and deadlines change frequently, so please do your due diligence. If a grant is out of date, look at the following year or the next time it’s offered. Many grants are so popular that they close early! (I have personal experience here).
